RL Circuit (5J20.10)

Description:

A large inductor in series with a resistor, a battery and a switch. When the switch is closed the the current rises slowly from zero to a steady state value as shown by the voltage across the resistor.


Procedure or Operation Notes:

The inductor is the large oil filled tank on the small rolling platform:

The resistor that we measure and plot on the oscilloscope is the 3kΩ potentiometer in series with the inductor.

Close the top knife switch to charge the inductor through the potentiometer.

Open the knife switch to discharge the inductor through both the potentiometer AND the 50Ω fixed resistor.
