Exploding Capacitor (Show and Tell ONLY!) (5C30.20)

Description:

Three 1500 mF capacitors are connected in parallel and charged to 400 volts. A discharge bar shows the stored energy could melt and vaporize metals. This configuration is no longer used or charged due to safety concerns.

Procedure or Operation Notes:

None. Show the capacitor bank and discharge bar to the class.

References, Comments, or Footnotes:

Warning: Most electrolytic capacitors are not rated for pulse discharge applications. They have a higher Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR) or Inductance (ESL) and can explode under high current pulses.
