Convection in Square Tube (4B20.10)

Description:

A large glass square loop is filled with water and heated by a burner near one bottom corner. The resulting circulating convection current is shown by adding drops of dye to the water.

Procedure or Operation Notes:

The square tube is shown empty above. The tube will be filled completely with clear water and any air bubbles will be removed prior to use.

Turn on the gas and light the burner. Add some food coloring to the top corner. Ask the class which way the dye will disperse.
