Two large scales show the weights of a container of water and of an aluminum cylinder. When the cylinder is lowered into the water, its weight as shown on the scale decreases; the weight reading of the water container simultaneously increases by the same amount.
1) Place an empty beaker in the pan connected to the bottom scale:
2) Pour approximately 900 ml of water into the beaker so the bottom scale reads 3 pounds:
3) Place the red weight on the brass hex bar that is connected to the top scale:
4) Use the weight hanger to fully submerge the weight in the beaker of water:
5) Observe the new readings on both scales:
The top scale decreased from 4.5 lbs to 2.75 lbs (-1.75 lbs).
The bottom scale increased from 3 lbs to 4.75 lbs (+1.75 lbs).
